People Are Saying Meghan Has Changed In One Important Way Since Marrying Harry

Considering all of the royal drama of late, it’s safe to say that Meghan Markle has seen more than a few major shifts in her life. But recently sources have picked up on one particularly huge change. So what caused this change? And why has it sparked such a massive media frenzy?

Groundbreaking addition

Mind you, Meghan’s marriage to Prince Harry had already created a number of firsts for the royal family. The Duchess of Sussex is the first British royal from the U.S. since the 1930s, for instance, and she’s a rare woman of color for the country’s monarchy. And although she’s not the first divorcee to have graced British royalty – that honor belongs to Wallis Simpson – it’s certainly unusual. It’s so out of the ordinary, in fact, that before Harry and Meghan’s wedding there was even speculation that the Queen might not attend the nuptials.

Historic wedding

This had been because the Queen is head of the Church of England. And while the Church doesn’t turn its back on divorcees, it certainly preaches that marriage should be for life. In any case, the Queen was in attendance when Meghan wed Harry on May 19, 2018, and the ceremony was beamed live on television. The event was watched by almost 28 million people in the U.K. and a further 29 million in the USA. That’s at least ten times more viewers than even the highest-rated episodes of the actress’s hit TV show Suits.

Harry's rare move

So it’s fair to say that things are very different for Meghan now. Yet in spite of Harry’s apparent desire to keep the new duchess sheltered from the pressures of the press, it seems that the increased scrutiny on Meghan quickly became too much to bear. In fact, some 18 months before their royal wedding, Harry made a move that was extremely rare for a royal to do.

Called out the press

Yes, Harry released a statement – via his communications secretary – denouncing the press’ treatment of Meghan. The message stated that Meghan “has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment.” It read, “Some of this has been very public – the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.”
